Monument record TQ 77 SW 174 - The cropmarks of a possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure
Summary
The cropmarks of a possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. The near-square ditch defined enclosure is close to the foot of Telegraph Hill. It is approximately 48m square although the south-eastern and north-eastern sides are straighter than the north-western and south-western sides. The south-western corner forms a right-angle while the remaining three corners are curved. The enclosure is cut in half (or is positioned above) a straight ditch aligned north west-south east. Beyond the enclosure this turns to the south west. This may have been a boundary ditch or could have joined a narrower cropmark to the west that runs approximately parallel and formed a second enclosure. A number of pits are also visible, the majority within the square enclosure and concentrated along the south western side. These features, which indicate more than one phase of activity, were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
