Full Description
A small shallow cut that appears to date from the Early Neolithic period was discovered during the full excavation of a site that was redeveloped to become the site of a new Tesco store. This followed an evaluation of the area in question, during which no Neolithic features were discovered previously. This shallow cut feature appears to be the only definite Neolithic feature found, and which was located towards the north-western end of the site. There was one other possible Neolithic feature which lay South- South-East of the shallow cut and which was a possible segmented ring ditch but this may also be Bronze Age in origin. The small shallow cut contained the truncated remains of a lugged carinated bowl of Early Neolithic type. Rim sherds from a possible second vessel, were also discovered and it is likely that this small shallow cut was cut specifically for at least one vessel.(1)
