Full Description

Two small scale excavations in the garden of 78, West Street (built AD1643) shwoed a succession of demolition layers and yard surfaces. The lowest demolition layer of wattle and plaster in the excavation nearest the house (TP 23a) was associated with a medieval property previously on the site. The second excavation (TP23b) further down the garden to the north revealed a cobbled surface made of small flint pebbles, dated, on the basis of pottery in the layer above, to late medieval at the latest. A nearby excavation in the garden of the former Castle Inn yielded a rich variety of post medieval material such as Nuremburg tokens, ealry clay pipes, imported post medieval pottery and a terracotta cahing dish.
