Full Description

Earthworks under snow: possibly former field boundaries apparently respecting Stone Street: one double banked feature carries on as an extension of the line of a parish boundary. (TR 13454618). (1)

The double-banked feature is marked as a path on 1st-3rd Ed OS maps, which might be preserving the line of a trackway branching off from the Roman road. (1)

The desk-based assessment undertaken by Swale and Thames Archaeological Survey Company for land at Thorn Farm, Stone Street, Stelling Minnis, has identified a series of features from aerial photography and mapping to the south of that land that may relate to a possible large Roman building with associated earthworks and cropmarks. The field containing these features is adjacent to Stone Street, a Roman road. The report states:
"It is of some importance that just south of the proposed development area cropmarks have been identified as 'former field boundaries' (TR 14 NW 13) and work for this desk-based assessment has identified a possible large Roman building and earlier earthworks associated with these cropmarks." (2)
