Abstract/Summary

SWAT Archaeology undertook an archaeological desk-based assessment in advance of proposed development at Thorn Farm, Stelling Minnis. The assessment included research of Kent County Council and other sources and map regression analysis. No scheduled monuments, listed buildings, historic parks nor conservation areas were identified in the proposed development area 'PDA'. No paleolithic, mesolithic, neolithic nor Bronze Age features/remains were identified. Iron Age is represented by one unidentified copper alloy object (knife?) recorded at the HER. Romano-British period is represented by a Roman Road adjacent to the PDA. South of the PDA, cropmarks (noted at the HER)were noted and a possible large Roman building identified through this assessment and associated earlier earthworks. Other Roman features include a Roman gold finger ring, and a copper alloy fragment of a Roman tripd (all on HER). Anglo-Saxon period is only represented through place names. Medieval period is represented through find spots of pottery and coins (all on HER). Post-medieval period is represented by a number of farmsteads (on HER). Modern development is focussed on the development of the PDA since the 1970s. Summary - the potential for Romano-British archaeology is considered as high with other periods as low or undefined. Previous development of the site is considered to have had a high impact on archaeological remains, but some areas (e.g. the north area of the site) and the verges onto the Roman Road (Stone Street) are considered to have potential for surviving archaeology. Given the extent of previous development, proposed development is likely to have moderate impact and it is recommended that an Archaeological Evaluation should be carried out under planning conditions.
