Full Description

Medieval and post-medieval walls and floors were found during a watching brief at Rose Cottage, Sandwich in 2002/3. These relate to buildings that previously occupied the plot, the latest of which may have been demolished to make way for Rose Cottage.

In the back garden trench, a pit or ditch feature was found. The trench was too small to determine the exact nature of the feature. It was probably the earliest feature on the site but no dating evidence was recovered from it. It is likely to be of earlier medieval date. Remains of two medieval walls were also found. The first was 0.7m wide and 0.28m high, consisting of three or four courses of chalk lumps and flint beach cobbles. It had been robbed. It cut a layer with later medieval pottery. The second wall was 0.49m wide and 0.2m high, consisting of two courses of flint cobbles, it had also been partially robbed. It is not thought that the two walls are related.

In the front garden trench a narrow trench found a wall and a series of chalk floors. The wall was only partially exposed but was 0.34m wide and 0.18m high, built from flint cobbles and sandstone lumps. It is thought to be early post-medieval in date. The three successive floors consisted of rammed chalk and were associated with a post-medieval floor tile. (1)
