Full Description
Excavation undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 2006 at Forster Road prior to proposed development.
Rural activity consisting of ditches and postholes. The earliest feature was a hollow which seems to have been water-filled for most of the year, before eventually silting up. Middle Bronze Age pottery was found. Animal bone and worked flint was found nearby. Ditches relating to a field system or controlling livestock movement (to the water-hollow?) and a roundhouse dating to the Middle-Late Bronze Age were sited nearby. Further ditches date to the Late Iron Age / Early Roman. A pit dating to the Roman period contained some cereal grains. The Saxon period sees the construction of three probable wells and an associated structure. There was a gap in seen activity before the construction of a series of gullies containing small quantities of 12th-13th century pottery, which possibly represents a rectangular enclosure within a larger enclosure. Pottery analysis suggests a gap in activity in the Early/Middle Iron Age. Environmental analysis reveals the changing nature of the landscape. (2)
