Full Description

[TR 15155763 sited from plan (2)] Roman and medieval pits, Anglo- Saxon grubenhauser, possible iron smelting building of 10th century. Pottery, coins (2nd century and later), scraps of metal, oyster shells and animal bones from the area of 41 St George Street. Excavations took place in 1944 either side of Bargate Street at TR 15145763 and TR 15165763 close to the frontage of St George's Street. To the west of the lane excavation was in a cellar to the east in open ground immediately adjacent to the city wall. In the cellar to the west a number of rubbish pits were found dating from the mid 2nd century into the 4th century. Two short lengths of gully, probably a drain were also found. It appears to have been open as late as the late 3rd-4th century. The area had been badly disturbed by the cutting of medieval pits. In the cutting to the east the Roman bank of the city wall was found, but the relationship between the wall and the bank had been destroyed by a large medieval pit and the wall itself was a medieval rebuild. Twenty medieval pits were discovered, all except one dated to the last quarter of the 13th century. In the east cutting the medieval city wall was shown to post-date a large medieval pit containing late 13th century pottery. (1-4)
