Full Description

(TR 15085778. Two trenches were dug in the cellar of No 50 Burgate by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in 1947. All medieval levels had been destroyed but deep Roman stratification remained, and it was clear that the area was occupied throughout the Roman period. Above early levels including a Belgic pit were floors and occupation levels belonging to a succession of buildings which fronted onto the north- east side of an east-west street. The first building on the site was probably of the late 1st century. No stone walls were found and the buildings were assumed to be entirely of timber. The latest levels were late 4th century in date, subsequent deposits having been destroyed. (1-2)
