Full Description

(TR 15045777) A Roman street, medieval pits and building were discovered during excavations conducted by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in 1950 25m south of Burgate Street and the same distance west of Iron Bar Lane. Overlaying a layer of Belgic ploughsoil an east-west Roman Street was found. It appeared to be orientated towards the West Gate and was probably laid in the mid 1st century AD.The remains of what may be a 5th century timber structure which cut into the surface of the street was found. The remains of a successionof timber buildings which fronted the south side of the street were excavated. Occupation dated from the late 1st through to the late 4thcentury. A metalled lane laid down c150 was found running at right angles to the main Roman street, dividing the insula. It went out of use probably soon after 250 when it was covered by a Roman extension. A large number of pits, mainly of 14th century date were found cut into the Roman levels. Post-dating most of these was a succession of stone buildings originally constructed in the mid to late 14th centuryand representing a considerable expansion into the rear areas behind the frontage of Burgate Street. Details of the structured histories of two of these stone buildings were recorded. Many of the medieval walls were rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries and the property boundaries have survived to the present day. One building erected in the late 13th or early 14th century seemed to be of timber, but few details were recorded. (1)
