Full Description
(TR 15095778. Sited from plan 2). Roman building, medieval pits buildings were found when three small trenches were excavated by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in 1948 at No 51 Burgate Street. In one, Roman levels had been largely destroyed, but a succession of occupation layers belonging to a Roman building which was constructed in the early 3rd century and demolished cAD350 were examined. In the other trenches Roman levels were found directly under a cellar floor where two rooms of a Roman house were found. Two 13th century pits cut earlier 11th and 12th century deposits. Sealing the pits were a succession of buildings dating from the 14th century to modern times and details of their structured histories wererecorded. Part of the earliest building contained a sequence of threecircular bread-ovens and was probably a bakery. (1-2)
