Summary

Great dorter at St Augustine's Abbey, completed by Abbot Hugh de Fleury in 1120. Mostly destroyed in the 17th century but much of the large north wall of the dormitory is still visible. The dormitory was built on a large groin-vaulted undercroft and has been calculated to have been three bays wide by about fourteen bays long. It is thought to have been the longest monastic dormitory in the country.

Full Description

The dormitory of St Augustine's Abbey seems to have been completed by Abbot Hugh Flory c1120. Originally 204x44ft, it is one of the longestin the country. Thorne (a) states that it had a chapel constructed init and studies adjoining, but hardly anything now remains above groundexcept the N end wall, which stands to a height of 24ft. (1) Great dorter, standing upon an undercroft, destroyed to within a few feet of floor level except the N end. Dormitory undercroft 193ftx42ftdivided by 2 rows of columns supporting the vault.
