Full Description

(TR 15075821) A number of mid-to late Saxon pits, cut into the back of the Roman rampart and Saxon pottery were found during excavations in 1977 in advance of a public garden being constructed at the junction of Church Lane and St Radigund's Street. Shortly after these pits had been filled the back of the rampart was cut into, and the first of a sequence of late Saxon or early Norman intra-mural streets were laid. Five coffined inhumation burials, which cut some of the layers of street metalling, were uncovered. These were probably interred some time after the foundation of the church of St Mary-upon-Northgate probably in the late Saxon or early Norman period. (1)
