Full Description

(TR 15045821. Sited to south side of Church Lane). Medieval pits, buildings, oven and post medieval buildings were discovered during excavations on the south side of Church Lane, between 1983-4 under the auspices of the Canterbury Archaeological Trust. Levels representing the levelled Roman rampart were cut by 12th century pits some containing much mortar and flint rubble, which is interpreted as waste material from the heightening of the city wall in the 12th century. These pits were associated with crucible fragments. The first timber structures were constructed along the Church Lane frontage in the 13th century. These were associated with ovens and may have been industrial buildings/workshops. During the 15th century these structures were replaced by a row of timber-framed buildings with dwarf walls of flint and mortar. These were domestic in nature and conformed to a standard medieval 'hall-house' form. These structures were replaced by brick-built structures in the 17th century and the late 18th century saw the erection of two blocks of tenements. Some of these structures stood until the 1960's. (1) TR 151582. Excavation revealed traces of late 14th to early 15th century timber structures, one containing several ovens and burnt floor, suggesting an industrial site at 5 Church Lane. (2) (Area centred TR 15045821 sited from OS 1:2500 1957). Late 14th/early15th century timber structures overlaid by four well preserved 16th century houses were excavated in 1983 just inside the city wall along the Church Lane frontage next to St Radigand's Restaurant.
