Full Description
(TR 14695734) Bastion [NR]. (1) Whitecross Tower. (2) Stands to its full height, although much restored. (3) Tower No 1. One of five medieval towers preserved between Worth Gate [TR 15 NW 187] and Riding Gate [TR 15 NW 141]. All are semicircular and open, contain gun ports but may not have been built uintil the late 15th century. The foundations of Whitecross Tower were examined in 1968. These were seen to comprise three offset courses of large chalk blocks set in yellow mortar and laid directly on the natural brickearth. (4)
