[TR 14935760 and TR 14975755 - see plan (4)] Roman and Medieval finds were discovered during excavations by JH Williams (1) in 1967. The site measuring 80m by 40m was to be developed as a multi-storey car park (see OS 1:1250 1974). Both time and space were limited and consquently much of the interpretation is based on sections and the results must therefore be treated with caution. Although there was much pottery of Belgic character, no group could be definitely assigned to the pre-Conquest period and occupation on the site seems to have begun soon after the conquest. Timber and stone buildings of 1st and 2nd century date were revealed at both ends of the site, but although 3rd and 4th century material was recovered, no structures could be assigned to that period. Several medieval pits, predominantly of 11th century date were found. (1-5)
