Full Description

(TR 14935753. This site has been deduced from the assumed numbering of Watling Street NE side. These buildings are shown on OS 1:500 1873. They were destroyed by wartime bombing). Roman and Medieval finds. At No 6 Watling Street trenches dug by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in 1945 located two possible Roman Streets, 20.7m apart, overlying earlier Belgic material. The metallings interpreted at the time as Roman Watling Street and a street slightly east of it, aligned on Roman West Gate, were possibly early Roman tracks or roads laid out before the main street grid was established early in the first quarter of the 2nd century AD. The excavations also revealed remains of a Roman Wall foundation positioned between the two streets, at right angles to Roman Watling Street. Pits were also found. Some 31 medieval pits dating from the late 13th to early 15th century were emptied during excavations in the cellar. At No 5 Watling Street a small trench dug in the cellar by the Canterbury Excavation Committee revealed the east edge of a Roman wall, which was also found in the cellar of No 6 Watling Street. A clay figurine was found. Five medieval pits were emptied during a small excavation in the cellar. A fragment of a late Saxon or early Norman loomweight was recovered from one of these pits.
