Monument record TR 15 NW 244 - Iron Age, Roman, Medieval finds

Summary

Excavations in 1983 revealed a mid 1st century ditch and a clay quarry. Flavian features included rubbish pits and in the early 2nd century a major NE to SW street was laid out. In the 2nd century a few rubbish pits were dug. The area remained as open ground until a masonry building was constructed in the late 4th century. The line of this wall may have been visible in the Medieval period as rubbish pits and cess pits are arranged on its south side.

Full Description

(TR 14805754 sited from plan p126 auth 2) (see illustration card). Excavations took place in 1983 in cellars belonging to early 19th century cottages demolished in the 1960s. The earliest features all dated to c.mid 1st century and included a ditch and a large clay quarry. Features of Flavion date, mainly rubbish pits, were also encountered. In the early 2nd century a major north-east south-west aligned Roman street was laid out a few metres east of the site. Open ground prevailed until the 4th century, with only slight indications of occupation which included a number of rubbish pits of 2nd century date. Sometime before the end of the 4th century a masonry building was constructed along the Roman street frontage. The latest Roman levels were truncated by the 19th century cellars. The line of the late Roman wall or even the wall itself may have been preserved into the early medieval period, since a row of 11th or 12th century rubbish and cess-pits ranged down its southside. The foundations of a building were observed by J Pilbrow in 1868 at the south-east end of St John's Lane. These foundations may be associated with the Roman wall found in 1983. (1-4)
