Full Description

(TR 14915771. Sited from plan. CAT Ann Rep 1979-80 p.6) Belgic, Roman and Saxon features. Work began on the Marlowe II excavation in July 1978. The earliest features on this site consisted of a circular hut and clay extraction pits. Overlying these levels were the remains of a large timber building, possibly implying a Roman military presence. The next phase consisted of a bath complex (see TR 15 NW/283). A major street was discovered separating the two insulae containing the Public Bath House and Theatre. Fronting the north side of this street was a multi-phase Portico enclosing the Bath complex. The Portico survived until the twelfth century when it was extensively robbed. A sewer was recorded running along the centre of the street. In its final phase sewer deposits overlying the street surface preserved the faint traces of a planked floor from a later timber- framed structure. This building extended halfway across the street from the masonry Portico in the fifth century. Post-dating the decay of this structure was a four phase 6th-7th century sequence of Saxon timber-framed buildings. (1-2) Additional bibliography. (3-10)
