Full Description
(TR 14755765 sited from CAT plan) Cakebread Robey 1. (TR 14745766 sited from CAT plan) Cakebread Robey 2. Excavations in 1976-8 at 77-79 Castle Street found two Belgic huts, with hearths containing Belgic pottery and potin coins dated to the early years of the 1st century.
Overlying these was a large Roman Street and two more narrow streets; one was paralled and north west of the main street, and the other was aligned north-south and three metres further west. A large colonnade, possibly surrounding a temple faced onto open courtyards and is dated to the late 1st to 3rd century (see TR 15 NW/110). This was later covered by a surface of Roman building debris and slag with hearths and post-holes containing Roman and Anglo-Frisian pottery. Saxon features included flimsy timber buildings, three possible drainage ditches, small rubbish pits and a possible clay extraction pit. Later occupation is represented by medieval and post medieval floors and rubbish pits. (1-3)
Eighth century bronze ornament found. (4)
10th century Anglo-Scandinavian ornamented knife found. (5)
