Full Description
(A:TR 14835814 B:TR 14725806 sited from fig 1 auth 2). Roman finds, medieval buildings. Two trenches were dug at separate points on St Peter's Lane. Roman levels in trench I (TR 14835814) were sealed by a possible burnt medieval floor overlain by thick occupation levels. These deposits were cut by a very large pit containing 13th and 14th century pottery which may have been dug to bury demolition deposits. These levels were sealed by a floor which was in turn sealed by black loam and modern deposits. (see illustration card). In trench II (TR 14725806), a complex sequence of medieval levels were examined. Overlying the waterlogged latest Roman levels was a thick layer of black mud which was probably deposited in the medieval period to raise the ground level above the water-level prior to the construction of buildings. A single medieval pit cut this deposit and both were sealed by a loam floor which yielded 19th century material. A final floor which sealed the pit, was in turn capped by occupation and demolition deposits. A sequence of dump deposits separated the second-phase building from a third. This building had clay floors, a tile drain ran along its south side and the remains of a tile fireplace was found in its south- west corner. The building probably went out of use in the 17th or 18th century. (1-2)
