Monument record TR 15 NW 460 - Romano-British bldg, M pit

Summary

Two phases of Roman timber buildings were found dating from the first to the late 3rd century. A floor or a yard of 4th century date sealed the buildings and there was evidence for iron working. Three pits dating from the mid 11th to mid 13th century cut the Roman levels. These were sealed by a loam floor containing 13th to 17th century material. In turn cut by a hearth.

Full Description

(TR 14915803 deduced from OS 1:1250 1971). Elements of a Roman timber building of two phases dating from the second century AD. The building was re-furbished in the late 2nd or early 3rd century and went out of use in the late 3rd century. The remains of a 4th century metalling for a floor or a yard sealed the earlier building. This may have been associated with iron working. Three pits dating from the mid 11th to the mid 13th century cut the Roman levels and were sealed by a dump of soil, containing 13th century material and a loam floor yielded material dating from the late 13th to early 17th century. The remains of a hearth were found cut into the floor. (1)
