Full Description
Evaluation found evidence of pits and post-holes. (1)
Subsequent excavation clarified the archaeological record, with evdience of droveways and associated field systems in area 6.
- Palaeolithic-Neolithic: Palaeolithic-Neolithic: a small assemblage of residual flint artefacts of uncertain prehistoric date was recovered.
- Bronze Age-Early Iron Age: 9 ditches and gullies, forming a possible droveway and associated field. Later ditches may have their origins in this period too.
- Mid Iron Age: No features assigned to this phase, but the droveway and fields may have continued to be used, especially as they appear to continue into the Late Iron Age. However, the lack of evidence from the Mid Iron Age across the Brisley Farm site may indicate a hiatus in occupation or a reduction in the population here, etc.
- Mid-Late Iron Age: further ditches, forming more fields, with the possible continuation of the droveway.
- Modern: 2 modern ditches
- Undated: numerous undated cut features. (2)
Geophysical surveying carried out by Archaeology South-East in 2012 found possible traces of the system continuing on land to the west. (3)
