Full Description
Evaluation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeology Trust in 2010 at 162 High Street, Hythe, prior to proposed development. Occupation deposits are limited to the 14th-16th centuries, over which was no activity until 19th and 20th century overburden. The nature of the boundary suggests the land was leveled in the 19th century, removing post-medieval deposits in the process. The base of arcaheological deposits was not encountered, thus earlier activity may still exist.
A quantity of Welsh slate may represent a 12th-13th century building in the vicinity. The earliest identifiable deposit was an occupation layer containing late 14th-early 15th century. This was cut by a substantial wall (0.5m wide) with an associated peg-tile hearth, suggesting a building extending to the NW of the area investigated, perhaps a two-storey stone-built structure constructed in the mid 15th-early 16th century. It is not clear when the building fell out of use. To the SE and SW of this building (external) were two contemporary clay-lined pits, which were probably backfilled in the late 15th-early 16th century. Their function was not determined but were probably of industrial use. (1)
