Full Description

Excavations carried out between 1998-2001 at the Saltwood Tunnel and Stone Farm Bridleway sites, by Canterbury Archaeology Trust and Wessex Archaeology, as part of the CTRL works.

Two Early Saxon Grubenhauser (sunken-feature buildings) were found. (A further was apparently found during the construction of the bridge across the M20, roughly central between the two found during these excavations).
The western Grubenhaus is rectangular in plan with major post-holes in the centre of each side and smaller ones in each corner, and is aligned with the Roman ditches (this may be a coincidence or may show the continuation of the ditches as landscape features). This area is devoid of any other Saxon activity with the exception of a single pit c.25m to the SW.
The eastern Grubenhaus was identified on the basis of form and size, though no internal post-holes were identified. c.75m to the SW were 4 deep steep-sided pits containing animal bone and Rhenish lava quern fragments. (1)
