Full Description
Isle of Thanet Electric Tramway opened on 4th April 1901 and linked the coastal towns of Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs. It was built by the Electric Tramways & Lighting Co. Ltd and provided about 11 miles of track. It was one of the few inter-urban tramways in Britain and ran across open countryside (now mostly built upon) between the three towns. On 3rd August 1905, a wet summer's day, Car No. 41 careered out of control during the routine descent down Madeira Walk hill into Ramsgate Harbour. It crashed through the railings and over the 30-foot cliff. Fortunately no one was killed and only the driver suffered injury. The line began at Westbrook, west of Margate, at the junction of Canterbury and Walton roads. It ended at South Eastern Ry Station. The trams were double-decker with open top roofs and could accommodate about twelve people, around benches, on the lower deck. The electric tramway closed after it was replaced by the buses of the East Kent Road Car Company on 27th March 1937. By 2007, most of the tramway had been removed however part of the tram-tracks were believed to survive near the start of the tramway and an old tram shed was in use as factory units on the corner near Westover Road.
