Monument record TQ 45 NE 11 - Fort Halstead, Dunton Green

Summary

This formed part of a scheme implemented in the 1890s for the land defence of London against the possibility of a Continental invasion. Fort Halstead was constructed in 1895 on a commanding position on the chalk ridge overlooking the Darent Valley. As with most of the other permanent positions, this was both a defensive position in its own right and a store for the ammunition for the artillery to be used in the line and for tools needed to construct the fieldworks. The permanent sites were labelled as ‘mobilisation centres’ in contemporary Parliamentary statements.
