Full Description
A lynchet NE of The Watling Street runs roughly parallel to it for about 1.75 miles across Barham Downs [TR 201 521 to TR 220 502]. At the NW end it consists of a positive and negative lynchet, separated by a terrace way. Here it passes close to the A/S barrows [TR 202 519]and is demonstrably older. Throughout its course the lynchet keeps below the highest part of the ridge, and it is, therefore, the SW limit of cultivation of people living to the NE. (1) This feature, which appears to be the remains of an old trackway alongthe ridge of Barham Downs, is almost completely destroyed by the plough. Its course, confused by field banks and tracks (now in their turn also destroyed), shows clearly on RAF AP's 106G/UK/1131/3123-7. Published 25 inch survey revised. (2)
