Summary

A series of cropmarks features are located in fields to the south of Brooks End which are visible on aerial photographs. Amongst the features a number of enclosures separated by trackways, pits, area features and a small ring ditch have been identified. These are thought to be evidence for an extensive settlement of possible Iron Age or Roman date.

Full Description

Complex of rectilinear enclosures separated by trackways, pits, linearfeatures, area features and a small ring ditch, mostly within area - TR 29556770 - 29606725 - 70006740. (1) Photographs (2-7)

The fragmented cropmark remains of a large possibly Iron Age or Roman settlement and trackways located to the south-east of College Farm which has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024 -RAF/541/508 RS 4043 22-APR-1950, NMR 1660/447 16-JUL-1979, NMR 2602/227 24-APR-1985 and EARTH.GOOGLE.COM MAR-2022. ACCESSED 03-MAY-2024. The settlement. The settlement has a central axial trackway aligned NW-SE lined with rectilinear enclosures and with perpendicular side roads heading and a cross-roads within the centre of the settlement. The trackway continues south-east for 685m out of the settlement where it appears as a low slight earthen bank visible on LIDAR Environment Agency DSM 07-DEC-2017. The entire site is marked by the cropmarks of numerous later large extractive pits. Scatters of smaller pits within the settlement may be associated with the occupation. Fragments of ditches - possibly part of the settlement or associated fields can be seen extending to the West and east of the site.

Another siteTR 26 NE 124 to the north-west is thought to be a duplicate of this site. (8-11)
