Full Description
(TR 287683 accurate to within 50m only) Cropmarks partially excavated in 1981. Site no. 86. (1) TR 287683 Brooksend. Ditches and pits datable to the Roman period were excavated in 1981 by D.R.J. Perkins on behalf of the Thanet Archaeology Unit. An interim report is with the Unit. (2) TR 28696825 Villa/RO/PM/Cropmark. Probable winged villa; rectilinear field boundaries are probably recent (3,4). TR 287683. Cropmarks show the remains of a Romano-British building. A minor rescue excavation in 1980 found boundary ditches and pits (see illustration card) (5). (TR 28706830 sited from Isle of Thanet Arch. Unit S.M.A. Map Diagram). Cropmark of probable Roman building. Cropmark and scatter investigated in 1980 and tentatively indentified as the remains of a small Romano-British building framed by ditches. A sectioned pit contained 1st-2nd century sherds. This site is not endangered by the agricultural process, since downhill drift has covered it in an overburden of more than 0.6m. The site is about 3m above sea level (6). Site photographs (7-9).
The cropmark traces of part of foundation plan of the villa (described above) and associated enclosures and are visible on aerial photographs - HEA 35255/018 16_JUN_2022 and have been mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. The villa faces NE towards the nearby bank of the former inlet (now infilled) of the Brooksend Stream. Cropmarks of the fragmented ditched traces of linear further enclosures can be seen around the core of the villa site representing the remains of the immediate villa compound, enclosures and traces of field boundaries. These boundaries overlap the ditches and enclosures of a field system on a slightly different alignment (MKE91279). (10
