Full Description
[TR 2900 6576] Monkton (linear feature centred). Trackway cutting through probable barrow cemetery (see TR 26 NE 82 and 17). Runs fromTR 2846 6589 to TR 2976 6566. (1)
Track could be either a prehistoric track (Cursus?), or a surviving fragment of Roman Dunstrete. (2)
The cropmark traces of a fragmented double-ditched trackway of prehistoric date or possibly a surviving fragment of Roman Dunstrete. The feature is visible running for c.1350m and appers to be the northern branch of the track which branches at a junction to the east at TR 2978 6567 (adjacent to a Romano-British settlement TR 36 NW 238), a southern branch curving down to the SW for a short distance before being lost at TR 2954 6563. Further fragments of ditch which may be the continuation of this southern track continue across the fields for a further 225m (recorded separately). This site was mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024.
