Monument record TR 26 NE 108 - Possible prehistoric and later trackway, near Monkton

Summary

Cropmarks of a trackway has been identified in fields to the north of Monkton. It is thought that this feature is either a trackway of prehistoric date or possibly a surviving fragment of Roman Dunstrete. The cropmark remains of this feature have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. The trackway is visible running for c.1350m and appears to cut through a probable barrow cemetery in the area (see TR 26 NE 82 and 17).

Full Description

[TR 2900 6576] Monkton (linear feature centred). Trackway cutting through probable barrow cemetery (see TR 26 NE 82 and 17). Runs fromTR 2846 6589 to TR 2976 6566. (1)

Track could be either a prehistoric track (Cursus?), or a surviving fragment of Roman Dunstrete. (2)

The cropmark traces of a fragmented double-ditched trackway of prehistoric date or possibly a surviving fragment of Roman Dunstrete. The feature is visible running for c.1350m and appers to be the northern branch of the track which branches at a junction to the east at TR 2978 6567 (adjacent to a Romano-British settlement TR 36 NW 238), a southern branch curving down to the SW for a short distance before being lost at TR 2954 6563. Further fragments of ditch which may be the continuation of this southern track continue across the fields for a further 225m (recorded separately).This site was mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024.
