Full Description

According to Greenfield, Meates and Birchenough in 1947-8 the central spur of Lullingstone Park [centred TQ 520 645] is crowned by a system of lynchets and ramparts, the latter suggesting a possible Belgic hillfort some 2200 feet long by 1000 feet wide. The ramparts are described in some detail with references to possible entrances. Greenfield, however, now considers it quite possible that these earthworks are no more than lynchets. There is no evidence of a hill-fort to be seen on the ground, only an extensive system of lynchets. These are best preserved on the S side of the spur where they reach a height of over 3.0 m. They extend to the N side of the spur but are much reduced by cultivation. Nothing determinable visible on air photos. Possibly associated with the Belgic [?] ocupation site (TQ 56 SW 22). (1)
