At the E. end of the central spur in Lullingstone Park, on the edge of a small wood in the area centred at TQ 52046450, many fragments of 1stc. BC/AD pottery, some flint flakes and three pieces of iron slag were found by Col. G.W. Meates in 1947. During field investigation a V-shaped ditch, about 3.0m wide and 1.0m deep, was seen in a water main trench at TQ 52156452. In the side was a patch of black earth and burnt clay (? hearth) containing a rim sherd of 1st c. AD (Belgic) pottery. This is probably the site of a settlement contemporary with the surrounding field system [cf. TQ 56 SW 15]. Area now falls within a golf course. (1)

TQ 52164570. Signs of Iron Age occupation were encountered while a golf course was being laid out at Lullingstone Park in 1964. A large pit was discovered on digging a deep trench from Park Gate for water supply to the new green on the brow of the land visible from Lullingstone Castle. The pit was approximately circular and 18 ft in diameter. It had been cut out of the natural chalk and lined with clay and it may originally have been a water catchment. It was found to contain, however, a mass of carbonized material containing quantities of 1st century pottery. The debris had been into the pit in a burning state and may suggest the remains of a burning hut nearby. The pottery closely accords with that recovered from the ditched enclosure near Summer House Knoll (TQ 56 SW 16). (2-3)
