Monument record TR 35 SW 31 - Early-medieval cemetery; ring ditches, linear features

Summary

Cropmarks of a possible Anglo-Saxon inhumation cemetery identified on the northern slopes of Beacon Hill, Great Mongeham. The cemetery appears to comprise several hundred Anglo-Saxon graves, some surrounded by small ring ditches. Possible Iron Age/Roman enclosures were also identified. Saxon finds were discovered here in 1911 and 1913. The site lies on the brow of a downland spur, facing east-south-east. OD50m.
