Full Description

TR 31515079. An Archaeological site at Willow Woods, Northbourne was discovered in 1978, on the northern side of the road between Willow Woods and Little Mangeham prior to the cutting of a gas pipe trench. An 8m wide strip of ground had been cleared of top soil, by the SEGB, revealing the underlying upper chalk. Cutting the chalk were at least four ditches. Due to the rate of progress of the trenching operations, excavation and recording of the site, by the Dover Archaeological Group, was rapid and incomplete. The fill of all the features was similar, consisting mainly of brown loam with chalk lumps although the bottom of feature two contained chalk rubble (See illustration cards). The site produced a total of nine pot sherds. All but one sherd of pottery came from feature one, together with several pieces of burnt Greensand. All the pottery appears to be of Iron Age date.
