Full Description
Centred at TR 323508 an extensive series of sixteen archaeological features were revealed in 1978 on the northern side of the road between Stoneheap Farm and Stoneheap cross roads, when an 8m wide strip of ground was cleared of top soil ahead of an SEGB pipe-trench. These lay on the south east facing slopes of a dry downland valley on upper chalk. Excavated and fully recorded by the Dover Archaeological Group. Most of the features located were fairly shallow ditches, generally with a 'U' shaped profile. In nearly every case the fill was a brown loam, with flints and small chalk lumps (see illustration cards). The majority of the excavated features were devoid of any dateable material. Only five features produced any pottery; a total of nine sherds, eight of which were Iron Age and one more typical of the Roman period, although it could have been of Iron Age date. The extent of the Stoneheap Complex has still to be ascertained. This could probably be achieved by the use of aerial photography. The interpretation of the features excavated must remain uncertain until more information is available. On the present evidence, it seems possible that they formed part of the field boundaries associated with a prehistoric farmstead and may thus have some connection with site 1. (See TR 35 SW 49). (1)
