Full Description

TR 3454 5142 A series of three linked enclosures with a possible trackway extending along the SW side were surveyed by members of the Dover Archaeological Group early in 1981 at Great Mongeham (see illustration card no 1). Two trenches were excavated across some of the earthworks (see illustration card no 2). The archaeological finds indicated a period of occupational activity during the C13th and C14thon the basis of Tyler Hill pottery found underneath one of the banks. The earthworks themselves are of a later date and are possibly 'late medieval' or early 'post medieval' in date. Their precise purpose is uncertain (could they be fishponds?) but they certainly formed some part of the old village of Great Mongeham. The finds and notes are kept in Dover Museum. (1)
