Full Description

A series of pits dated to the 20th centuary were discovered during an excavation that took place over a wide area ahead of road works at junction 2 of the A2/A282. In area A (excavation areas to the west of the M25) the pits that have been found have been interpreted as World War Two light anti-aircraft emplacements. The pits are up to 3.8m in diameter and arranged into two pairs 25m apart with a single pit centrally placed. This confirguration of pits is concurrent with the setting of pairs of guns with adjecent pits for munitions storage with the central pit possibly having held the pivot for a firing control instrument.
