Full Description
[TR 37276533] Chapel [NR] (Rems. of) (NAT) (1) The Chantry Chapel of the Holy Trinity at St. Lawrence became a dwelling after the Reformation and gradually became a ruin. Windows remaining are 15th c. and the walls are earlier. (2) Part of the east wall is all that now remains of this chapel. It stands to a height of about 2.5m, is constructed of knapped flint and contains the lower half of a blocked window. (See GP/53/51). (3) TR 373654. This is the site of a medieval chapel/chantry house used as a dwelling since the Reformation. Portions of the standing walls were pulled down in 1985. Foundations and possibly an infilled undercroft may survive beneath the cottage garden. (4) Additional bibliography. (5)
In 2010 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a watching brief on land to the west. A medieval boundary ditch was found, probably forming the boundary of the chapel land. (6-7) They also carried out an archaeological evaluation by 5 evaluation trenches. A narrow linear gully was excavated adjacent to th Chapel and is believed to represent the very base of the property boundary ditch. The recovery of pottery sherds datable to the period of 1350-1450AD suggest the chapel was of mid to late medival date. (8)
