Monument record TR 36 NE 69 - Romano-British settlement, Castle Avenue, Broadstairs
Summary
A Romano-British occupation site was discovered in 1979 on Castle Avenue, Broadstairs. Two ditches, a pit and three small post-holes were found, and these contained Roman pottery and domestic rubbish. Based on the pottery two main phases of occupation were suggested: phase 1 - the late first and second centuries AD, and phase 2 - the third and forth centuries. The ditches were thought to represent an enclosure or boundary, or possibly have some relationship with a nearby burial site (see TR 36 NE 5). It is thought that a lack of stone structures may be evidence that timber buildings were present at this site.
