Full Description
Two pits were found during an evaluation and excavation in 2011 at 114 Canterbury Road, Lydden. The first was roughly circular (c.1.84m by 0.4m) and contained over one hundred potsherds with a broad Early to Mid Iron Age date range (550/450-350/300 BC). The second pit was much larger and extended beyond the limits of excavation. It was probably a quarry pit. A 1.8m section was excavated to a depth of 2.39m and it was at least 7.2m wide. The uppermost fill of this pit was found to contain burnt daub fragments, small animal bone fragments, burnt flint, five later prehistoric but undiagnostic pottery sherds and one early Iron Age sherd. Also found were five struck flints, including three blade flakes, of probable Neolithic or Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date, these were most likely residual. (1)
