An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land at Monkton Court Farm by Canterbury Archaeological trust in April of 1999, ahead of the construction of a storage building. The evaluation comprised two trenches, both 15m in length. A linear feature was located in trench 2, this was aligned approximately NE/SW and crossed the trench at an angle near the west end. a 1.2m length of this feature was excavated and was found to be c.1.3m wide at maximum. In profile its upper sides sloped at around 45 degrees, but the lower edges were near vertical and the base was flat. The feature was 0.4m deep. The fill was a light brown compact clay loam with inclusions of flint, some charcoal and common small chalk nodules which increased in concentration towards the base. The fill was otherwise completely sterile apart from one very small and worn fragment of late Iron Age pottery. In the light or nearby Iron Age and Roman discoveries to the south, the feature may be related to a field system on the margins of a nearby settlement. (information summarised from source) (1)
