Full Description
Pits observed in all three trenches, at Land to rear of 51 High Street, Sevenoaks. In Trench 1 a refuse pit was observed, it was sub-oval and contained 3 sherds of pottery, 12 fragments of Post-Medieval pottery and animals bone and oyster shell. In Trench 2 there were another pit-like feature which was retangular in shape, containging 12 sherds of pottery, fragments of Post-Medieval brick, clay pipe stems and bowls, a fragment of corroded or burnt iron nail, animals bone and a clear glass bottle. The pottery dated to late 18th - early 19th century. Feature appeared to be capped to seal it as a refused pit. Two smaller pits were observed in Trench 3, the first was circular and represents either a refuse pit or graden features, containing 3 Post-Medieval tiles, 3 sherds of glass, a fragment of corroded iron sheert, animals bones and oyster shells. The final pit had nor dateable material and appears it may be a post-hole. (1)
