Full Description
In all, nine pits were found during the second phase of the evaluation done by Trust for Thanet Archaeology in 1993. In trench A, a sub-rectangular pit was observed, but not fully excavated, yet midden material was revealed and Romano-Birithis sherds of pottery, including Samian and amphora, as well as a flint scraper and blade flake. Trench B yielded 5 pits; four were found contain midden deposits and Romano-British pottery sherds or shell. Pit F6 also contained part of a carved chalk spindle whorl. The last pit was small and cut by a posthole, and yielded a large brass of Nero, as well as bone, shell and Romano-British pottery. Trench C, E and F all contained just one pit and trench D and G had none. (1)
