Full Description

[Area TR 332686] Crop marks (enclosure and possible ring ditches). (1) There is nothing to be seen on the ground, which is partly under crop and partly under plough. (2) TR 333687, located to the nearest fifty metres. Cropmarks. Site no 81. TR 334688 located to the nearest fifty metres. Cropmarks of enclosure. Site no 82. (3) TR 331686. Large irregular fields, the boundaries ranging from straight to semi circular. Small rectilinear enclosure at TR 33206865. (4,5,6) TSMR 0635- Sub-rectangular enclosure with internal features. (8)

The cropmark remains of two large D-shaped ditched enclosures which appear to form fields or adjacent compounds of uncertain date - possibly Bronze Age, Iron Age or early medieval in date have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024 . (Photographs: Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 21-APR-2007, HEA 3467_29749 29-JUN-2015 and HEA 3368_29750_006 29-JUN-2015)

The western enclosure measures 420m x 310m and the eastern enclosure 240m x 180m. The western enclosure has traces of sub-divisions and a suggestion of expansion on the northern side. This has a rectilinear sub-divided enclosure 50m x 60m appended to its eastern side. A fragment of a possible annex to the south of the western enclosure is also visible as fragments of ditch. Cropmarks of pits of uncertain date within the enlosures may not be associated with the site. Both enclosures lie at the core of, and appear to have been incorporated into a later more rectilinear field system which appear associated with numerous possibly medieval settlement enclosures extending to the west, north and north-east. These are recorded separately. (10-12)
