Findspot record TR 36 NW 50 - Roman occupation site and associated finds, near Manston airport, Minster parish
Summary
An early Roman occupation site was discovered in 1971 during the laying of a gas pipe-line close to the A253 road and opposite Manston airfield. The site consisted of one small shallow ditch and seven large hollows. Found within the fill of the ditch was a scatter of pottery and bone. The shallow depressions were filled with fine loose ash and a number of pottery sherds, as well as bone, some of it worked, nails, knife-blades and pieces of slag. On the basis of this evidence a possible industrial function has been suggested for the site.
