Full Description
A small scale excavation, K46, was carried out in the back garden of 42 Ospringe Street, as part of a research project being carried out in the Ospringe area by the Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group into prehistoric and early medieval human activity. This spot was chosen because there was reason to believe that the cellar of a nearby house houses substantial medieval remains. Below a modern garden path layer and a post medieval demolition layer, at a depth of around one metre was a layer of large, shaped flints caked with mortar containing a lot of whole shell. This flint layer appeared to seal a layer below which were only small sherds of Roman and Romano British pottery. The flint layer was seen as a demolition or collapse layer for a previously unknown medieval building or wall in the immediate area.
