The wall was built in 1583 and was created by cutting a trench and piling the spoil up so as to create both a ditch and a bank on the seaward side. The sea wall was breached in 1779. (1)
In 1995 an evaulation was carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at Browning's Yard, Whitstable. A dicth running on a north-south alignment was found. The ditch was created on the inside of the sea wall for drainage pruposes. As the ditch was created the spoil was used to create a bank which the sea wall would be situated upon. The bank would aid in preventing flooding, and the dicth aided for drainage. The sea wall was created in 1583 and therefore so was the ditch. It was re-cut at these twice, possibly to retain its function. The sea wall was breached in 1779. This same dicth can be seen in Trench C. (1)
There is late 18th/early 19th century pottery sherds found within the ditch and it is thought that thisd ditch fillw as laid down around the time of the great flood of 1779, this flood marks the highest of a serises of exceptionally high tides occurring at the time. (1)
There was large amounts of ceramics, many dating from c.1790-1825, within the ditch and are thought to have arrived there due to dumping deposits. Indicating the fundtion of the dicth had altered to be used as a refuse dump. (1)
