Full Description

In 1995 an excavation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology along a pipeline between Deal and Ramsgate, at Sandwich Bay. A shallow ditch running on a north-west south-east alignment was noticed. It was thought it may be part of an enclosure since there was a corner turning to the north-east. 51 sherds in all were found in the ditch and were of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery. Four pits were also present, and of these all of the pottery present suggested they were contemporary with each other and the ditch, dating to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age, c.900-550 BC. One pit suggested evidence of burning, and it contained animal bone and a sherd dating between the Late Bronze Age/Late Iron Age. Another contained large amount of animal bone (78 fragments) and two Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery sherds, as well as two intrusive Early Medieval sherds. The third had 11 sherds dated to the same and the final pit had pottery dating c.700-400 BC. (1)
