In 1995 South Eastern Archaeological Services carried out a watching brief and a subsequent excavation at Lydd Quarry on Areas A, B and C (later Lydd 1). An urned cremation was found during the initial topsoil stripping on the site. Despite attempts to locate other such burials in the area, no further cremations were found. During the excavation, a layer with Roman pottery was found overlying the gravel in one area. This may have been the result of near by occupation, agricultural activity distributing manure from such a settlement or a flood deposit which distributed debris over a large area. A gully appeared to be of Roman date. (1 and 2)
